Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago located off the east coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean. The name Zanzibar is believed to have originated from the Persian word “Zangi-bar,” which means “coast of the blacks.” It is part of Tanzania and is composed of two main islands, Unguja (also known as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba Island, as well as several smaller islands.

The islands are situated south of the Equator and lie approximately 25-50 kilometers off the Tanzanian coast. The highest point in Zanzibar is the 120-meter-high Masingini Forest, located in the center of Unguja Island.

The capital city of Zanzibar is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. And as much as Zanzibar has its own government and parliament, it is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. It is not an independent country.

Zanzibar is popularly referred to as the spice island for its beautiful and turquoise waters, coral reefs, and the epic diverse marine life among many others. Municipalities

The Zanzibar government has a unique political system that includes both the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (RGZ) and the Zanzibar House of Representatives (ZHR). The government is headed by a President who is elected by the Zanzibar House of Representatives. The archipelago is further divided into 10 administrative regions, each headed by a Regional Commissioner, with further subdivisions into districts and wards.
