Egypt is an independent and transcontinental country located in the north eastern region of Africa and the south western part of Asia. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and Israel and the Gaza Strip to the east.

Egypt has been a republic since 1953. The President is the head of state and government, and exercises executive power. The President appoints the Prime Minister who is responsible for running the day-to-day affairs of the country, ministers, and deputy ministers.
The country is divided into 27 governorates, each of which is headed by a governor appointed by the President. The governorates are further divided into regions, districts, and municipalities, each of which has its own administrative structure.
